I listen to countless CDs each year,  and few of them are truly transcendent pieces of art. Furthermore, few CDs released today could be considered masterpieces. But, every once in a while, along comes a CD, seemingly out of nowhere, from a recording artist who manages to buck all the trends, do their own thing, and do it better than anyone else. Norah Jones did something like this in the pop music world, and was rewarded with incalculable riches and fame.

In the Christian music world, there’s a young woman named Heather Murk of the music group Myrrh. She and her father, violinist Bill Murk, have recorded a simply elegant masterpiece called “Closer.” Granted, since it’s Christian music, it won’t sell 10 million copies, and this father-daughter duo probably won’t grace the cover of Entertainment Weekly or Rolling Stone.

But, and here’s the best part… fame and fortune don’t matter to the Murks. They really don’t. All that is fleeting anyway. What matters to them is God. Loving Him. Thanking Him. And using their talents to serve Him the best way they can. Heather and her father have made a CD that fulfills both their purpose and destiny. Considering that they both almost died when they were hit head-on by a semi-truck in 1999, it’s a testament to the Lord’s ability to heal and restore that they’re alive and able to make such wonderful music.

“Closer” brings together a number of songs you’ve probably heard before, but you’ve never heard them the way Heather and Bill perform them. That’s what makes this CD so special. The list of gentle songs includes “I Love You Lord,” “There Is None Like You,” “Humble Thyself In The Sight Of The Lord,” “Shout To The Lord,” “To The Lamb,” “As The Deer,” “It Is Well With My Soul,” and “Ancient Of Days.” When you listen to these touching songs, with their lush backgrounds and Heather’s unique voice, you will feel as if you’re floating on clouds. The heavenly atmosphere of each song will relax you. “Closer” is such a peaceful, contemplative CD.

The CD is aptly named “Closer,” because Heather says its purpose is to draw us closer to God. With ethereal beauty, “Closer” succeeds. If you buy one CD all year, get Myrrh’s “Closer.”
